Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toenails are a common and often painful condition that occurs when the edge of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing redness, swelling, and tenderness. This condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including improper nail trimming, tight-fitting shoes, and even genetics.
At Carrollton Foot Center, our podiatrists are experienced in the treatment of ingrown toenails. The first step in treating an ingrown toenail is to evaluate the severity of the condition. This includes examining the affected toe and taking X-rays if necessary.
In many cases, conservative treatment is enough to resolve the problem. This includes soaking the foot in warm water several times a day, wearing comfortable shoes that don’t put pressure on the affected area, and avoiding tight socks or hosiery. We may also recommend over-the-counter pain relievers to help manage discomfort.
If conservative treatment fails to relieve the symptoms, we may recommend a partial nail avulsion. This is a minor surgical procedure that involves removing a portion of the nail and the underlying tissue. The procedure is typically done in our office under local anesthesia, and most patients experience minimal pain or discomfort during the recovery period.
In some cases, a chemical matrixectomy may be necessary to treat chronic or recurrent ingrown toenails. This procedure involves applying a chemical solution to the nail bed to destroy the underlying tissue and prevent the nail from growing back.
It’s important to seek treatment for ingrown toenails to prevent complications such as infection or the development of an abscess. If left untreated, an ingrown toenail can become a chronic problem that requires more extensive treatment.
